The April 2011 A - Z Blogging Challenge - B is for Bond!

Saturday Night at the Movies! 4/2/11

Who cares what picture we see?
Nobody in particular I guess, as long as whatever it is has something B related in it so I can continue posting in The April 2011 A - Z Blogging Challenge!

And that means I'm going to indulge one of my favorite things and bring on the Bond. James Bond.

B is for Bond!

Let's go back almost 25 years...to the 25th Anniversary Year for 007, in fact...

What I love about this trailer: it reuses a pretty funky version of the Bond theme written by forrmer Beatles' producer George Martin for Live and Let Die in 1973; it introduces Dalton pretty excitingly; it features (as does pretty much every version of a trailer for this flick) the horse riding guy carrying a rocket launcher sidesaddle - and the launcher seems to accidentally go off - flying off to the side of the battle and missing all the fun; and I have a particular fondness for the section of the trailer where they totally misrepresent what happens in the movie - you apparently see Bond cut free while climbing a rope - he falls - but lands on the top of a truck which is being driven by one of the baddies...luucky! And of course, that's not at all what happens in the movie - another agent is cut free, his body (a dummy) falls to its doom, and Bond chases the man responsible, ending up on the roof of his truck - but the trailer's version makes me laugh every time I see it!

We always get the poster in addition to the trailer - this time we're going with what's called the British Quad:

Another interesting new aspect of being a fan of movies is that there are other very talented fans out there who have the hobby of making new trailers for older movies in the current style of movie previews; and these can be shared online free of charge, keeping the copyright lawyers at bay. Here is a fun preview for The Living Daylights in the style of the two Daniel Craig 007 pictures:

So, The Living Daylights sits ready for watching in my collection - DVD only, no Blu-Ray release (yet!) - in case you want to drop by tonight to see it.

And til next post, you Can Poke Me With A Fork, Cause I Am Outta Here!

  1. I never actually liked Bond while growing up, but I can definitely see the attraction now, looking back at them.

  2. Love BOND! I really prefer the Sean Connery films to the later ones. My fave? Goldfinger!

  3. Thanks for posting not one but two trailers for my all-time favorite Bond flick!

I know, I know, it's heresy to choose Dalton over Sir Sean. On the whole, I'll take Connery's Bond over all the others. But for this film, extenuating circumstances exist.

To wit: A friend introduced me to Bond the year before this film hit theaters. I'd seen a still of the bridge explosion in a magazine of his. It was my first print teaser for an upcoming Bond film. I can still picture it. Heady stuff.

For whatever reason, that film's opening sequence resonated with me. The action, the cinematography, the mini-fight to the finish and the Bond-meets-girl bit at the end--pitch perfect, every note. The moment Dalton turns to see his follow-spy fall from Gibraltar is one of my favorite intro shots for any character, in any film (Indiana Jones and Jack Sparrow also top the list).

Finally, here's the clincher: I first saw the Living Daylights trailer with the buddy who introduced me to Bond, and who in the years since has become one of my dearest, most valued friends. Each time I see something from Living Daylights, I'm reminded of him.

Thanks for sharing your Fleming books with me, pal. I'm grateful to have you as my friend.

  4. Cheree - they hold up amazingly well - when ABC held the licence - note British spelling - they were still showing Dr. No twenty-five years after it debuted in theaters - but no network was showing any other movies that old or even half that old at that time and certainly not since. And that is discounting holiday and/or event movies like The Ten Commandments, The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz, and Gone with the Wind - the Bond movies were airing in regular slots where the week previous they were showing a two or three year old Burt Reynolds movie.

Luana - my first thought was to go to one of the really amazing trailers from the Connery run after Bondmania struck big - but two reasons I went with TLD - the Sean Connery movies already get a lot of love anytime 007 is mentioned - but Mr. Dalton - and Mr. Lazenby - get increasingly short shrift the more time that passes - and the second reason? Well, the very same pal who got me interested in blogging and sent me the link to this challenge - well, we saw the trailer for this movie together - and Dalton is kind of "our" Bond, so I wanted to commemorate our friendship with this trailer.

Joe - as always, thanks for coming by - your comments are as ever the perfect dessert for whatever pop culture meal I've laid on the table above. Thanks for all the positive feedback and friendship over the decades (!) and you're welcome for the point towards Fleming - it's nice to share the fandom with a friend!

  5. Great post! I love Bond films!

My favorites (of the older breed) are Dr. No and Goldfinger, but I can re-watch any of them.

I like the teaser trailer re-make of The Living Daylights. It's certainly one of the more "realistic" Bond films.

  6. Matthew - thanks for the kind words - I also love all of the Bond films to a one - and it's amazing how many talented editors are out there cobbling these really cool new previews together for all sorts of movies.
