The Video Vault of Mora Tau! 1/25/12

Hey, it's been a while since we've trekked to Mora Tau - that's kind of strange. In fact, it's downright WEIRD!

Back in the day when TNT was a much more interesting cable channel than it is now - which seems to be a couple of new series, lots of old series, and a constant stream of bad Robin Williams movies - TNT had some really fun and wild stuff on - like this goofy header to their Friday All Night movie show - which featured all kinds of stuff in the Turner vaults - from old horror movies to Godzilla; from 60's Italian sci-fi oddities to Hammer films. I caught some stuff taping these late night flicks - airing in the 3 am or later timeslot - that I've not seen before or since.

I miss 100% Weird, as it really gave this then relatively new cable channel some real character. Let's take a look at some more strange video clips from this series. I don't know what all we might see - but I do know one thing: it will be completely, totally 100% Weird.

No, I'm not sure what that movie clip is from. I hope I find out one day.

When the movies would go to commercial, sometimes coming back there would be a quick bit to let you know that this movie was indeed, 100% Weird. Here are several of those little animated bumpers.

Here's a promo for the very first show!

The other great TNT show was Monstervision - which was often hosted by the great Joe Bob Briggs. Here, let's have the man himself explain the whole thing...

And here's a great montage promo from that show.

These are all short clips, so I'll stick a few more in - I think we're still under 5 minutes total running time... Monstervision showed a lot of Godzilla movies - here's another great promo:

And to close this out - we'll go with the very last host segment from the very last Joe Bob hosted Monstervision...the movie was Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice....

TNT sure was a lot more fun in the 90's! Until next post, you Can Poke Me With A Fork, Cause I Am Outta Here!

  1. Indeed a weird collection of videos. Always appreciate your eye for the absurd. And that is a compliment! Every movie/show should not be taken too seriously. Escapist fun is vital.

  2. Matty - Absolutely - and shows like "100% Weird" and "Monstervision" bring a real sense of "we're all in on how silly this is" to the viewer, making that absurdity all the more entertaining. Sadly, I think this kind of entertainment has died out, replaced by snarky hipster humor that takes potshots at everything viewed - putting a distance between the viewer, the hipster, and whatever is being watched. Tosh.0 is an example. He's funny at times, but I often find myself wanting not to enjoy something he's showing because he's being such a dbag about it. The kind of shows highlighted here had a genuine affection for the movies shown while at the same time not shying away from the goofy nature of some or most of them. I try to bring that same affection that I have for this stuff through in this blog. Thanks for coming by! Don't be a stranger!

  3. OMG!! This is GREAT!! I loved TNT's Monster Vision and 100% Weird. Man, I miss those days. Now it's all Law & Order reruns and innumerable airings of 90's action flicks. I cannot stand Air Force One anymore. LOL

I miss Joe Bob and his wisecracks. It was like the red neck Elvira show.

  4. MB! So glad to see you! Thank you - yeah, happened across one of the clips searching for something else - and realized a few of these would make a fun post! And you're exactly right - Joe Bob and Elvira are very much on a par with each other - if only they'd hooked up back in the day - we could have little Briggsviras or Elbobs running around showing movies now! I would like to see those two teamed up on something! That would be amazing!
