Saturday Night at the Movies 3/9/13!

Who cares what picture we see?

If Trini Lopez doesn't, he's hiding it well, and whether he has a hammer or not - let's pick this flick:

Usually held up as the quintessential "guy's movie," this World War II action flick takes a corker cast and puts them through their paces - directed by the great Robert Aldrich. Interesting to me that the trailer calls Jim Brown "Jimmy" - one wonders if the narrator would have done it to his face? And the trailer doesn't mention George Kennedy other than listing his name in the cast credits - but then he was still a few months away from taking home that Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Cool Hand Luke...

The movie resides in the video vault on a Blu-Ray disc - so we could be seeing these guys get turned loose on the Nazis in high definition any time - even tonight - if you want to come over and hang out!

Until next post, you Can Poke Me With A Fork, Cause I Am Outta Here!

  1. War movies... it's the same with western or comic adaptations. I've only seen a couple and they totally didn't made me a fan of the genre.

    1. Well, there you go. If they're not your cup of tea, then we're not likely to find them brewing in your pot.

  2. Craig: This is one of my favorite films of all time. Seriously. I first saw it 1968 at the drive in with my family. I was 11. It was awesome. When I was a few years older, in jr. high, my brother and I would act out the parts. I was Franco (my favorite character), and my brother was Major Reisman. What's your name, soldier? Number eleven.

    1. Luana - you continually surprise me in your film fandom - never would have put this that high on your list! But that it is - that's very cool! Have you ever watched Joe Dante's Small Soldiers? There's a big treat in that movie for Dirty Dozen fans!

  3. Craig: Yes, I do remember Small Soldiers...but it's been a while since I've seen it. I don't recall the D.D. reference. There was also a reference to The Dirty Dozen in Sleepless in Seattle.

    1. It was actually more than a reference - several of the "good guy" toys in the movie are voiced by actors from The Dirty Dozen - with George Kennedy, Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown, and Clint Walker - it was a real behind the scenes reunion! Sadly, they were to have been joined by Richard Jaeckal as well, but he passed away during production - Bruce Dern took on the role in his place. (Another side note - the bad guys are voiced by a This Is Spinal Tap reunion of Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer!)

  4. The Dirty Dozen was an awesome movie. My dad got me into it when I was about 14 or so. He had a thing for war movies. He was a fan of Lee Marvin. This had a just an incredible fun cast. I'd watch with you for sure. ;)
