Saturday Night at the Movies 5/30/15!

Who cares what picture we see?

I truly do believe Dwight Frye would - so we will pick this one tonight...

I know that trailer is not the original - the "Re-Released by RealArt Pictures" at the end gives it away - and I don't know if that is an original poster or one from a re-release as well. However, none of that takes away from the raw and primitive power of this now 84 year old (!) movie.

Two more words to describe how amazing this movie is: Boris Karloff.

I grew up watching the Universal Studios Monsters movies - and while I now see the flaws and weaker aspects of some of them - I still count them all among my favorite movies.

I have this in a Blu-Ray so crisp you can see the wrinkles in the backdrop used for the "night exterior" scenes - and we could be watching this one any time - even this very evening - if you'd like to join me.

Saturday Night at the Movies 5/23/15!

Who cares what picture we see?

Sorrells Pickard surely must. While I make sure, we'll make this tonight's pick...

I somehow missed this one back in the day - finally getting to it just a few years ago. I didn't know what I'd been missing! What a fun little flick, a gem among the 80's beach movies. Three middle aged guys rent a beach house and hire Grant Cramer to teach them how to push up on the young lovelies spending the summer near the waves.

Silly humor and lots of nudity ensues. What more could anyone ask?

Well, okay - then how about this - Hardbodies also features none other than Kane Hodder as a beach nerd who periodically hassles our heroes!

That's Kane Hodder on the left. Yes, I'm serious.

You know, I have to be honest - although I didn't initially remember - I actually already featured this movie as a SNATM subject three years ago - but I didn't realize that was Kane Hodder then, so to justify featuring this movie again, I'll go right ahead and make this a...

Saturday Night at the Movies Double Feature!

Let's have a moment of intermission...

And then we'll jump right in to the second Hardbodies - an in-name-only sequel that can only boast the same director returning.

I'm not sure they could have done much to continue the "story" with the same characters, so going with a new bunch and changing locations was probably a good idea. It's more beach babes on display, and once again, a pretty painless way to pass an evening.

Hardbodies and Hardbodies 2 are both on DVD in the video vault, and I could get them spinning anytime - even tonight - if you'd like to come check them out with me!

What I'm Up To!

I thought I'd drop in and throw up a post letting you all know what's up in my life - to an extent - to explain why the blog posts are going to get a little more sparse - not that they weren't already a little sparse the last few months.

I can't go into full details - yet - but I have actually been approached with a paid writing gig - and you know I had to say yes to that! So my time is now not my own - and won't be until I finish this project. I'll still be putting up the Monday movie poster and Saturday Night at the Movies posts - but they are going to be bare bones for a while.

Wish me luck, and I'll post more about all this when I can.

Maniacal Movie Poster Monday #212!

Due to circumstances beyond my control - which I may explain in a post in a few days - my time is limited, so we are going with three posters and few words this week...

Saturday Night at the Movies 5/16/15!

Who cares what picture we see?

Raymond J. Barry probably would, but someone needs to check for sure. While that's happening, this will be tonight's choice...

It goes without saying that I'm a huge fan of Bruce Lee. When his son Brandon first popped up on my radar in the Dolph Lundgren vehicle Showdown in Little Tokyo - I thought he was pretty marvelous. Then he starred in this action flick - which is solid old school action movie goodness through and through.

Brandon Lee was a talented actor, and while not as fast as his father, certainly acquitted himself well on the action side as well - and with all the practical fights and stunts - Rapid Fire is one of my favorite action movies.

It's in the video vault on DVD and we could be spinning it at any time - even tonight, if you'd like to dodge the bullets and run on over.

Celebrity Endorsement: Art Evans!

Art Evans pops up in Fright Night as a police detective who comes to Jerry Dandridge's house investigating mutilation murders - and ends up dragging Charley Brewster out by his ear when Charley accuses Jerry of being a vampire.

He also turns up in Die Hard 2, and many other movies - and he's a man who knows good pop culture blogging when he sees it...

Thanks, Mr. Evans!

Maniacal Movie Poster Monday #211!

Theme Week!

3 Posters, 1 Movie!

The Beast of Hollow Mountain  (United Artists, 1956)

Not one of my favorite dinosaur movies - but three pretty cool posters for it - with the third being my pick due to the split background color scheme.

Saturday Night at the Movies 5/9/15!

Who cares what picture we see?

Ken Foree probably wouldn't - just keeping it real - but we'll go with this one tonight...

The Re-Animator gang got back together for this second stab at H.P. Lovecraft's writings - and while I admit that I prefer Re-Animator - this is still a wild and crazy sci fi horror flick jampacked with giant practical special makeup effects.

It's in the video vault ready to spin any time - and we could be checking it out this very evening - if you'd like to join me!

Saturday Night at the Movies 5/2/15!

Who cares what picture we see?

Well, after 26 posts for the April 2015 A-Z Blogging Challenge - we get back into the regular swing of things with this post - and I have to believe Benicio del Toro most certainly would care - so this will be tonight's choice...

After putting the teaser trailer in to the Z post two days ago as a birthday present to myself - I got a taste to see more from this 007 movie. I liked Timothy Dalton as James Bond - his first movie - The Living Daylights - had been written before he was picked for the role - so it had some holdover business from exiting Bond Roger Moore - comedy bits mostly cut out in editing after deciding to play to Dalton's strengths and desire to be true to Ian Fleming and more serious.

Then, for his second movie screenwriters Michael Wilson and Richard Maibaum wrote the film to play to Dalton's interpretation of the role - and I thought it was marvelous. Bond and pal Feliz Leiter interrupt their drive to Felix's wedding to catch South American drug lord Sanchez (Robert Davi) who has come to American territory to catch and punish a wayward girlfriend.

The drug lord escapes, and exacts revenge on Felix and his new bride. Now James Bond is out for vengeance - and he's going to bring Sanchez's entire empire down - even if it means resigning from her Majesty's Secret Service!

A good story, a solid villain, and fine performances all around - combined with the usual eye popping stunts and action - and it's ready to be watched in high definition from the Bond 50 Blu-Ray set anytime you want to use your Licence to Drive - and come watch it with me - even tonight!
