The movie is Night of the Living Dead.
Since then John Russo has written more - books and movies - including Midnight, The Majorettes, and the novel Return of the Living Dead - that prompted its own spinoff film franchise.

I remember reading the book when I was in high school around 1973 or 74. It was so scary I could only read it during the day in the sunshine. Creeped me out completely. Years later I finally saw the film, but the book had been so scary that the film didn't really bother me that much.
