12:01 (New Line Television, 1993)
I don't know if this was made for television or just premiered there - but it's an entertaining movie - a variation on Groundhog Day played more for thrills than laughs.
12 Angry Men (United Artists, 1957)
The quintessential trial drama - first produced onstage, then adapted to this terrific movie. The plot has been borrowed by scads of TV shows - dramas and comedies - in the years since - and there was a very respectable TV movie remake in 1997 - but this is the one to see.
12 Rounds (Fox Atomic, 2009)
I don't know why I haven't seen this action flick yet - a high concept plot and a wrestler starring - right up my alley!
So...what importance does the number 12 have this particular week....hmmm....

12:01 seemed to just crawl out on VHS over here, but I never got around to it. I used to enjoy looking out for the cynical cash-in's on bigger films, and hey, it's a trend that continues today, just a lot more shamelessly! (I'm looking at you, Asylum...)
ReplyDeleteI definitely understand what you mean about the mockbusters - as the Asylum flicks are known over here - but like Edge of Tomorrow - this seems more just another tale told with the same basic setup - a day repeating and being lived over and over again - than a ripoff.
DeleteCraig, absolutely, I never intended to imply that this film was anywhere near the 'mockbuster' standards, but sure some of our favourite genre movies gleefully wear their influences on their sleeves - and we wouldn't have it any other way!
DeleteFinally someone who remembers 12:01. I love that movie. Faaaaar from being as great as Groundhog Day, but still wonderfulll entertaining with a superbly executed time loop concept. I like!
