Saturday Night at the Movies 5/31/14!

Who cares what picture we see?

Elisha Cook Jr - you just know he does. So this is the choice for this evening:

The early 70's produced some fun vampire flicks - this, the Count Yorga movies - the last couple of Hammer Draculas. Sure - the 70's trappings make it a little silly these days - as does the whole Blacula name - but past that this is an entertaining movie with some scary moments.

And you know - it did well at the theaters - so well you know they had to make another one - so let's just go right ahead on and make this a...

Saturday Night at the Movies Double Feature!

A quick break...

...and on to feature two!

I've not actually seen this sequel - but the fine folks at MGM have done me a righteous and put the movie on the same DVD with the original - so we are all that much more set to watch this duo at any time - even tonight - if you don't fear "Dracula's Soul Brother" in the night and want to come by,,,

Random Stew 7/29/14!

Just a quickie - a little photo I snapped this morning that shows even TV shows name check this blog...

Star Trek season one episode "The Galileo Seven." Roughly 14 minutes in.

I hear the line in a lot of TV shows I watch - but I haven't made any efforts to catch or catalog them. Maybe that will change...

Saturday Night at the Movies 5/24/14!

Who cares what picture we see?

I gots to know if Albert Popwell does...so while I check this is the pick for tonight...

I first saw this one on VHS - and even smooshed into a pan and scan horror - the gritty brilliance of Don Siegel's cop drama still shone through. Taking the real life Zodiac Killer and morphing him into Scorpio (Andy Robinson) - then pitting him against world weary Harry Callahan - sheer bliss for an action junkie.

I have this one ready to spin on a correctly ratio-ed disc - and we could be counting Harry's shots any time - even tonight...if you feel lucky...well, do ya?

The Video Vault of Mora Tau 5/22/14!

Let's have a little video fun - shall we?

Here's a guy you don't usually see on a talk show...

That is indeed Kane Hodder in full gear - and it's a fun clip. Jason Takes Manhattan is still a low point in the series though.

Maniacal Movie Poster Monday #164!

Theme Week!

Lethal ladies!

Lightning Bolt  (Woolner Brothers Pictures Inc, 1967)

Good ol' Anthony Eisley (Dracula vs Frankenstein) stars in this Italian James Bond knockoff. Any part of that sentence reveals my desire to see this movie!

Chainsaw Sally  (Forbidden Pictures, 2004)

You know a movie's got its heart in the right place when they get Gunnar Hansen to cameo and hand him a chainsaw. And you have added bonus Herschell Gordon Lewis! I want to check this one out!

Dracula's Daughter  (Universal Studios, 1936)

Okay - I've seen this one at least! Universal Studios Monsters FTW! This turned out to be a pretty cool follow up to Dracula. So did the later Son of Dracula as well.

Saturday Night at the Movies 5/17/14!

Who cares what picture we see?

I have to admit the odds are Steven Seagal doesn't - but we're going with this one anyway...

I know. I know. It's one of his 21st century movies - where he's only present for the medium close up and close ups. I know he's no longer the striking snake of old but instead a lumbering bear assisted by the editors in appearing to achieve some percentage of his original speed. But I still like Steven Seagal - so there you go.

It's on DVD - and we can be stop watching his actual screen time whenever you'd like to come over - even tonight!

Buddha Man Cave!

He's so busy these days we hardly see him - but the golden headed movie reviewer is finally back!

Beyond the Grave

This is a wild and surreal indie flick with a mysterious and unnamed lawman (Rafael Tombini) in pursuit of a mysterious criminal called the Dark Rider across a post apocalyptic landscape. It’s a world much like ours, and yet very different – perhaps due to the fact that the seven gateways to Hell have opened up – nice nod to 7 Doors of Death there. In fact, there are scads of nods to other movies here – and the whole thing feels like an offshoot of Stephen King’s Dark Tower books. But don’t get the idea this is a ripoff or anything – no, this is a dark, moody, and original movie made by filmmakers steeped in fantasy and horror filmmaking. Consequently they don’t miss a chance to allude to other movies – this has moments that feel like flicks as far reaching as the Phantasm and Mad Max movies.

Things have most definitely taken a turn for the worse...

As it is a cinematic tone poem - with mood and mystery taking center seat - there’s not much else to say for a synopsis. The characters are fleshed out with a minimum of fuss by the cast; the effects and stylistic touches bely the film’s low budget; and the movie is well put together all around, from the crisp cinematography to the interesting locations. Kudos to writer/director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro and thanks to producer Isidoro B. Guggiana for contacting me about viewing the movie. You have to be willing to stick with this one - there is a deliberate pace in the middle section, and the film is in Portuguese with English subtitles - but there are prime payoffs for those who enjoy movies that strive to be different and that succeed in keeping the mundane to a minimum. Recommended.

Spider Woman: Death Web

What the hell was that? A bargain DVD picked up for $1 somewhere yielded an astonishingly weird and not particularly entertaining foreign film of unknown origin. I couldn't even find this one on the IMDB. It's of Asian origin - that's as much as I know. I'm going to guess it was made in Thailand. Four friends set out to explore the jungle and try to solve the mystery surrounding a mysterious tribe who lives there. One of them gets captured and sort of possessed by the spider woman god who protects the tribe.

If she's a spider lady - is this "spinnydipping?"

After that a lot of nothing happens for what seems like hours and hours - then the movie starts to come back to life - with the young woman escaping a hospital with terrible CGI putting her torso on a giant spider body - then a while later the foursome battles the spider woman god in the form of a very large CGI spider. Very shortly after that the movie ends. It's pretty low grade, dubbed, and other than the last twenty minutes or so - pretty boring. Sure, the DVD only costs $1 - but how much is the hour and half this thing sucks from you worth?

Maniacal Movie Poster Monday #163!

Theme week!

Let's take a look at three variations of poster for the same movie - in this case an innocuous 1950's rock and roll movie co-starring someone you might not expect...

Rock, Pretty Baby!  (Universal International, 1957)

Not a huge amount of variance in the three posters - but still different enough to warrant a look. And how about Mr. John Saxon getting all second lead on us?

Saturday Night at the Movies 5/10/14!

Who cares what picture we see?

I can say with absolute authority that Kathleen Wilhoite does, so this will be the choice for tonight...

I first saw director Kevin Tenney's Ouija board horror flick in the theater - and I remember enjoying it. Now I've just purchased the Blu-Ray from those fine folks at Scream Factory so I can see it again. This time I know who Stephen Nichols is - and I worked once with Kathleen Wilhoite, so it'll be nice to see her adding one of her eccentric characters to the proceedings here.

If you'd like to check it out with me - even tonight - you only need come on by!

Maniacal Movie Poster Monday #162!

Well, after a month of movie posters, now we can finally get back to some...movie posters!

The Protector  (Golden Harvest, 1985)

Jackie's third attempt to break into the US market - after The Big Brawl in 1980 and the Cannonball Run movies in 1981 and 1984 - this flick tried to make Jackie into a Chuck Norris/Charles Bronson style tough cop - which is completely unlike Jackie's natural winning persona. Consequently, it failed. (That's not to say the movie isn't entertaining - it is - if only to see how it doesn't work.) It took another twelve years and a little flick called Rush Hour - to finally make Jackie Chan a superstar in America.

Dracula's Widow  (De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, 1987)

Sylvia Kristel makes a fetching Mrs. D in this otherwise tepid horror flick shot right here in my current hometown of Wilmington NC!

The Blue Horse  (Corosa Pictures, 2009)

I know nothing about this movie - but man, that's creepy.

Saturday Night at the Movies 5/3/14!

Who cares what picture we see?

I'm not particularly sure if Crystal Sholts would or not - but regardless - it's this one this time:

I know little about this ultra low budget video indie - but it sounded good when I read a review so it just got added to the video vault. If you want to see if it's any good with me - just come on by - like tonight!
