A-Z Challenge 2013: A is for Allison Hayes!

For the 2013 A-Z Blog Challenge - the third for LGOOH - I've decided to do more of a theme - and to suspend the regular departments for the month.

This time out, the month's posts are going to highlight people from all facets of pop culture - not the 26 most important, or my 26 favorite - just 26 people who have made a mark in movies, television, books, music, or any other mass media - and deserve a moment in the spotlight.

At best, I'm hoping you'll be intrigued enough to seek out some of these people's artistic endeavors. At worst, I'm hoping for 26 posts that will be fairly brief (can you imagine me saying that!) and not eat up too much of your time.

Here we go - for the inaugural post in the 2013 A-Z Blogging Challenge -

A is for Allison Hayes!

Allison Hayes was a striking beauty in the 50's and 60's - first credited in one of Universal Studios' talking donkey movies - Francis Joins the WACs. She went on to appear in dozens of movies and television shows across the next several years.

She makes it into this blog challenge for several reasons: among her many co-stars - Roger Moore (on his American series The Alaskans) and Elvis Presley (Tickle Me was her last feature film); she appeared in five Perry Mason episodes as different characters; some of her movies include The Hypnotic Eye, Roger Corman's The Undead, The Unearthly, and The Zombies of Mora Tau - which inspired the fabled location of this blog's Video Vault of Mora Tau posts.

And then there's the movie she's most famous for - the movie that would have gotten her this A spot if she'd never worked on another production in her life - because Allison Hayes starred in

Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman!

If you've never seen Ms. Hayes in a makeshift giant bikini pursuing her philandering husband across town bellowing "HARRY!" then your movie watching is in no way complete.

Allison Hayes worked hard - nearly 70 credits in just 16 years in the business - but her health declined across the 1960's and she was unable to work in the 1970's - she passed away at the age of 46 in February 1977 - far too young.

Thankfully she did leave us a sizable body of work that we can still enjoy. Cheers to Allison Hayes!

While we're kicking off this blog challenge - I'd also like to take a moment to mention another "A" - Arlee Bird - of the very cool blog Tossing It Out - Arlee came up with this whole A-Z Challenge - which has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception!

Thanks for conceiving of this great blog fest, Arlee - I'm pleased as punch to be starting my third straight April A-Z Challenge with this post!

And we are off on this Blog Challenge! Do please come back tomorrow, and until then, you Can Poke Me With A Fork, Cause I Am Outta Here!

  1. You launched your A to Z in a big way!

As a kid, I loved the Francis movies, and I remembered her playing opposite Donald O'Connor's Pete Stirling.

I can't help but look at the "50 Foot" photo and think, "Wow--she would have made the ultimate utility company employee."

What a beautiful woman--I had no idea she passed away so young.

Looking forward to your April posts!

  6. Brilliant theme, Craig! This a real opportunity for you to flex your diverse pop culture muscles. I can't wait to see my eyes experience new terrain and my mind expand beyond, for movie obsessives like us, the overwhelming minutia of film. Great start, buddy :)
