I love Rathbone and Bruce ...MB - how serendipitous! I love Rathbone and Bruce - and like you - I know Doyle's Watson wasn't a bumbler like Bruce's characterization - but the movies needed a little comedy relief - and he served an important purpose - he let the audience feel smarter than someone in the picture - since Holmes pretty much has us all beat in the brains department - and to me, it makes the moments when Watson is called on to provide serious medical info all the more effective.
